Start Summer on a High Note
For over a quarter-century, middle and high school musicians have learned about jazz from members of We Six during their annual week-long day camp. Students will perform jazz classics in small ensembles, participate in improvisation workshops, hear live performances, and learn about Milwaukee's unique jazz history. MJI's camps are ideal for beginning and experienced jazz players.
Middle School Camp: 9 AM - 12 PM - $275
Intro to Jazz: Open to all instrumentalists entering grades 5 through 8.
Prerequisite: Minimum of one year of experience playing an instrument.
High School Camp: 1 PM - 5 PM - $375
Open to all instrumentalists entering grades 9 through 12 and students who just completed their senior year.
Add-on Options: $140
(Available for those attending High School Camp)
LITTLE BIG BAND: 10:30 AM - 12:00 PM
Led by drummer Dave Bayles, this 10-piece band includes trumpet, trombone, saxophone, and rhythm section (piano, bass, guitar, vibes, drums). Music performed will include traditional big band swing literature, contemporary works, and Latin-style pieces. This is a great opportunity to play with a full band and learn about styles, techniques, dynamics, and improvisation.
ADD A COMBO: 10:30 AM - 12:00 PM
Enhance your camp experience by adding more small ensemble rehearsal time coached by MJI's experienced faculty. Learn works by classic jazz artists as you prepare for a final performance.
