Joe Sanders

Joe Sanders (bassist) was born in 1984 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and grew up near the intersection of Ninth and Locust Streets. A 2002 graduate of the Milwaukee High School of the Arts, Joe earned a scholarship to the newly formed Brubeck Institute at the University of the Pacific, where he studied with bassist Christian McBride. He later continued his education at the Thelonious Monk Institute, learning from artists such as Terence Blanchard, John Clayton, and Bob Hurst before relocating to New York City.
In 2011, Joe released his debut album, Introducing Joe Sanders on Criss Cross Jazz, featuring Luis Perdomo, Will Vinson, and Rodney Green. He went on to tour with the Roy Hargrove Quintet and performed internationally with jazz legends Wayne Shorter and Herbie Hancock. Joe has also been a core member of ensembles led by Gerald Clayton, Charles Lloyd, and Kendrick Scott, and has recorded with artists including Ambrose Akinmusire, Dayna Stephens, Theo Croker, and Ben Wendel. In 2023, he performed on Joshua Redman's Where Are We, which featured vocalist Gabrielle Cavassa.
Joshua Redman has described Joe as among "the greats of [his] generation and [one] of the most active and emulated musicians on the scene today." Joe has received numerous accolades, including second place at the 2009 Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz International Bass Competition and the ISB Jazz Division competition. As of 2022, he resides with his family near Marseille, France.
