The Interlude
3937 W. Vliet Street
The Interlude, located at 3937 W. Vliet Street, was a community-owned bar and restaurant that featured live music. In 1979, 340 members of the Westside Community Development Corporation, a nonprofit community organization, raised $10,000 to make a down payment on the establishment, which had originally opened in the mid-1960s. State Representative Dismas Becker, chairman of the corporation, said The Interlude would be a place where people could come to “exchange ideas, develop their own political sense, and talk about their own artistic and cultural needs.” A variety of music was presented, including blues and jazz. Artists who performed there included Jessie Hauck, Rich Crabtree, Sonya Robinson, Manty Ellis, James Benton, and Bob Hobbes. The organization closed the club in June 1987 due to economic challenges.
