Heaven City

S91 W27850 National Avenue in Mukwonago, WI

Heaven City, located at S91 W27850 National Avenue in Mukwonago, WI, has a long and unusual history. In the mid-1930s, Albert Joseph Moore, a former Chicago investment banker, purchased the land and established a religious commune called Heaven City, which newspapers at the time described as a cult. Newborns in the commune were given names beginning with the first letters of the founder’s name. After the commune ended, the property became a resort in the early 1940s and was said to be a hangout for Chicago gangsters. In 1989, it was transformed into an upscale restaurant that featured live jazz. Mark Thierfelder, and later the Rick Krause Trio with Mark Davis and Jeff Hamann, performed there three nights a week for several years in the early 1990s.
