Alfie's

4126 North Teutonia Avenue

Alfie’s, located at 4126 North Teutonia Avenue, was a jazz hotspot from 1967 until the mid-1970s. This uniquely shaped venue featured artists such as vocalist Charlene Gibson with the Manty Ellis Quartet, Berkeley Fudge, and Ramsey Lewis. In 1973, a fire destroyed the kitchen, causing $15,000 in damage. Club owner James Thompson had parked his motorcycle in the kitchen, and gasoline vapors leaking from it were ignited by a grill. Two waitresses and four customers fled to safety. A cook, trapped in the basement, was pulled to safety through a beer barrel chute by a neighbor.
