Known as Duke Ellington’s alter ego, Billy Strayhorn is one of the all-time great composers of jazz, and the man behind such Ellington Orchestra staples as “Take the ‘A’ Train,” “Chelsea Bridge,” and “Lotus Blossom.” His passionate melodicism and rich use of harmony are epitomized by his signature composition “Lush Life,” a singular classic of twentieth-century American music.
