LISTENING TO JAZZ—THE BASICS
ONLINE WORKSHOP WITH PAUL SILBERGLEIT
What exactly goes on in a jazz performance? Especially with all the improvisation that must somehow relate to the song at hand, it oftentimes seems it’s mainly the musicians themselves who know the inside story, while casual listeners are left with some confusion. There are of course many who feel an immediate affinity for the music and can enjoy its distinctive sounds without anything explained. But as with a football game or a Shakespeare play, there is much that can elude the uninformed observer, such that a little more awareness could only deepen their appreciation. In this basic how-to-listen class, MJI’s Paul Silbergleit will walk you through the essential roles of the various players in a jazz band, and the structures that govern a typical performance of a tune, in a way that hopefully contributes to your understanding and enjoyment!
Cost: $15
