THE GENIUS OF THELONIOUS MONK

This singularly brilliant and idiosyncratic composer created tunes that are at once angular and groovy, dissonant and utterly beautiful, and which have come to represent a distinct category in the repertoire of jazz musicians. He also helped to define the bebop language, and played piano in his own totally unique, strange, and hip way! Enjoy a tour through his classic pieces and performances in the company of fellow listeners, with the guidance of MJI’s Paul Silbergleit, while seated at a classy jazz venue.

The artistic output of this famously bold and passionate man and musician ranged from some of the most fiery, aggressive jazz ever heard to some of the prettiest, most lyrical ballad melodies one could imagine. Within the wide arch of his career, he played bass with the bebop greats, took the compositional torch from Duke Ellington, and helped to catalyze the avant-garde. Experience the intensity and beauty of Mingus’ music in the atmosphere of a real jazz club, in this listening and discussion session led by MJI’s Paul Silbergleit!
